About us

The first ever York Walls Festival is bringing together organisations across the city to host Open Days, lead guided walks and hold other events linked to the City Walls.

From Monday 6 August

The festival starts from Monday 6 August at York Explore Library where you can view archives relating to the York Walls that will be on display.

Friday 10 August

A launch event at York St John attended by the Lord Mayor and talks by archaeologist John Oxley. This event is ticketed. Visit the York Walls Festival Twitter (@YorkWalls) for more details.

Saturday 11 August

Bootham Bar 09:30 to 13:30
Treasure Trail walk, starting inside the Bar. Simon Mattam (FOYW) helps you follow walls-based clues - leading to a secret location. Approx. 45 mins.

Fishergate Postern Tower 10:00 to 16:00
Open Day. See inside this 16th century tower, complete with medieval loo. There will be a display of walls photos, 1840 onwards, from the archives.

Richard III experience, Monk Bar* 10:00 to 17:00
The Jorvik Group attraction will be open with costumed interpreters, games and activities to explain more about King Richard III.

Henry VII experience at Micklegate Bar* 10:00 to 17:00
The Jorvik Group attraction will be open with costumed interpreters, games and activities to explain more about King Henry VII.

Fishergate Postern Tower 10:15
Guided walk – Fishergate Trail. Chris Rainger (FFH) shows you historic sites just to the south of the City Walls. Meet at Fishergate Postern. Approx. 1hr.

Red Tower 11:00 to 17:00
Open Day. See inside this newly renovated tower, winner of a York Design Award. The café will be open. See the outside garden. WC there too.

Red Tower to Bootham Bar 11:30
Guided walk – Off the wall. Martin Hetherington (FOYW) leads a ground level walk, accessible to all, between the two towers. Approx. 1hr 30 mins.

York Explore 14:30 to 16:30
Map Attack! Investigate some of York Explore’s historic maps, and help recreate the city – and walls – out of Lego! Suitable for 3 to 12 year olds. Free, drop-in session, but children must be accompanied by an adult.
