About us

Power & Politics: From the medieval courts of Avignon to the drama of Beethoven's revolutionary politics!

Power and Politics: one of the most seductive, intoxicating and pertinent subjects of the modern age. Join us for a fascinating series of concerts, illustrated lectures and workshops all linked together to demonstrate that nothing in this world is new!

Guests include the acclaimed instrumental ensemble Brecon Baroque directed by violinist Rachel Podger (Friday 6 July: Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall, University of York); Gallicantus and the Rose Consort of Viols (Saturday 7 July: St Michael le Belfrey Church); gamba virtuoso Paolo Pandolfo & Friends (Sunday 8 July: NCEM); Theatre of the Ayre directed by Elizabeth Kenny (Monday 9 July: Merchant Adventurers' Hall); Sollazzo Ensemble (Tuesday 10 July: NCEM); Les haulz et les bas (Tuesday 10 July: St Lawrence Church); The Sixteen directed by Harry Christophers (Wednesday 11 July: York Minster); Nigel North & Michel Gondko (Thursday 12 July: St Olave's Church); Hathor Consort led by Romina Lischka (Thursday 12 July: National Centre for Early Music); Boxwood & Brass (Friday 13 July: National Centre for Early Music); Yorkshire Baroque Soloists (Friday 13 July; Chapter House, York Minster); Creative Europe Eeemerging Showcase featuring Prisma; Voces Suaves; Rumorum and BarrocoTout (Saturday 14 July).

We are also delighted to mark the remarkable career of harpsichordist/director Trevor Pinnock, as we present him with thebiennial York Early Musoc Festival Lifetime Achievement Award

The Festival would not be possible without a host of organisations and people, not least the Arts Council England, City of York Coucil, BBC3 Radio 3 and our headline sponsors Hiscox working with JWP Creers, Harrowells Solicitors, York Vikings Rotary Club and Shepherd Building Group. Thanks are also due to the Festival team, the NCEM and the venues that we visit each year.
