Journey back in time to discover how Christmas would have been celebrated 150 years ago on York Castle Museum’s enchanting Kirkgate; the ideal backdrop for a month of Christmas festivities, music and cheer.

Walk under the beautiful garlands, see the shop windows full of traditional gifts and enjoy the intimate glow of our decorated Christmas tree. Meet our Victorian residents as they prepare for the big day and discover the stories, magic and traditions that warm their cockles on the cold winter nights.

Hear about the history of gingerbread with special demonstrations, back by popular demand, Chris Cade will be performing his immersive one man family show of the Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol, and you can follow our festival trail, visiting the shops on Kirkgate, meeting costumed characters and solving festive puzzles to find Father Christmas.

The Lost Letters – A Christmas Mystery
Saturdays and Sundays, 25 Nov – 24 Dec
A cheeky Christmas Elf has hidden children’s letters to Father Christmas! Follow a special Christmas trail, visiting the shops on Kirkgate, meeting special costumed characters and solving festive puzzles to discover who the guilty Elf is. The trail concludes with a special visit to Father Christmas.

£5 per child. Includes a visit from Father Christmas and a traditional gift.

A Christmas Carol
Sat 9 & Sun 10 Dec and Sat 16 – Sun 24 Dec
Join our Ebenezer Scrooge as he discovers the true meaning of Christmas under the garlands of Kirkgate. Chris Cade is back with his immersive and intimate one man show of this much-loved Dickens Christmas classic, performed on our cobbled street.

Gingerbread Making
Saturdays and Sundays, 25 Nov – 24 Dec
Did you know Queen Victoria and Prince Albert introduced gingerbread as a Christmas tradition in the mid-nineteenth century? Discover more about the traditions of gingerbread with special demonstrations of Christmas tree decorations.
You might even get to try some!
