The Heart of Yorkshire Exhibition

Running until 17 January 2021, The Heart of Yorkshire:  Creativity and Culture in York Minster’s Collections exhibition takes place in the Minster’s 13th century Chapter House and features items not previously on public display.

Set in the 13th century Chapter House, the exhibition brings together around 50 items which tell the stories of culture and creativity in York over the centuries, from stained glass painting in the Middle Ages to the establishment of a craft guild for the city’s goldsmiths in the 1300s.

See one of the oldest stained glass panels in Europe, ornate 13th century silver artefacts discovered in a former Archbishop’s tomb and a copy of York’s first newspaper, printed in the city by an eminent female printer.

Other highlights include beautifully illuminated manuscripts, including the renowned ‘Slashed Missal’, which offer an insight into public and private worship over the last 800 years and 18th century playbills from York Theatre Royal, reflecting the important role drama has played in the city.

Since its beginnings in 627AD, York Minster has commissioned items to support its devotional and educational missions while collecting material and manuscripts in its library and archives which detail the city’s history and development. This specially curated exhibition is a rare chance to see some of these amazing objects, to celebrate the artistry and craftsmanship in the city over the centuries and to explore the role of the Minster at the heart of this rich and inspiring culture.

The exhibition has been made possible thanks to funding and support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Museum Development Yorkshire.
