Helen Thirza Addyman Lecture: Viking Age and Medieval Trondheim

About

Discover the Viking history of the Viking trading town of Trondheim.

Our guest speaker for 2020 is Chris McLees, archaeologist and researcher for NIKU (Norsk institutt for kulturminneforskning). In common with Jorvik, Trondheim comprised one of a number of small urban centres scattered across northern Europe and Scandinavia which played prominent roles during the Viking Age and later. Trondheim - also known as Nidaros - originated as a trading settlement in the 10th century. It rapidly gained wider national and international significance as a centre of royal and ecclesiastical power during Norway's transition to Christianity and state formation in the 11th and 12th centuries. This lecture will present the archaeology of this important place on the northern periphery of the Viking and medieval worlds, including the results of recent excavations at sites associated with the renowned late-Viking kings Olav Haraldsson (St. Olav) and Harald Hardrada.
