Shambles Market, Newgate, YORK, North Yorkshire, YO1 7LA
That Fudge Guy

Roy’s busy stall – on a prominent corner right opposte the butchers at the Newgate end of the market - has been a popular feature on the Shambles scene for visitors and locals alike for five years.

At his stall you’ll find an extensive display of dozens of baskets filled with ready-to-go boxes of his fine hand made fudge surrounding a large pick-and-mix counter where his customers can choose their own selection of sweet treats from his full range.

His fudges are all handmade in the old fashioned way by Roy himself in his own kitchen here in the city every Monday and Tuesday and then brought to market on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Amongst his regular fudges he makes all the classics including original buttery and clotted cream and the trendy newcomer salted caramel, along with dozens of more unusual flavours. He’s particularly keen to celebrate York and Yorkshire’s famous confectionery heritage through varieties of fudge such as his Pontefract liquorice, Wakefield rhubarb, Doncaster butterscotch and York’s very own chocolate orange.

Alongside his huge selection of regular fudges, you’ll find Roy is the only confectioner in York to still make traditional Scottish style ‘tablet’ and possibly the only one in the UK to make traditional New England style ‘penuche’. For the uninitiated, that’s pronounced ‘pen-oo-chee’ – so now you know. And his recently introduced range of dairy free vegan fudges are proving increasingly popular too.

And for those unable to visit him at the market in person, his ‘Flying Fudge’ mail order service delivers his fudge straight from his kitchen door to your front door. Visit his website for all the details.
