Waterways in and around York

Enjoy a fun day out and make the most out of the rivers and canals in and around York!

The Canal & River Trust have come up with free local maps and activity sheets for you to download. Spend your time on the river bank feeding ducks or just watching the boats.

When in York, make the most out of our two rivers - Ouse and Foss.

The River Ouse

Not only a great place to enjoy your day but also a fascinating area to explore in terms of history, the Ouse brings life to York. You can take a boat trip on the YorkBoat and hear about the history of York or hire a Red Boat and explore the river at your own pace. The River Ouse and the River Foss converge in York.

The River Foss

The River Foss is ideal for walkers - you can walk from Blue Bridge - where the Foss meets the Ouse - and follow the stream upwards, past Castle Mills Lock to Oulston Reservoir and then on to Easingwold.
