York International Women’s Week

York International Women’s Week

York International Women's Week 3-11 March offers a lively programme of talks, workshops, gigs, performances and other events, all intended to make women’s voices heard throughout our city and beyond. This is a community event, coordinated by volunteers, with activities organised by individuals and groups of women and men. Most events are free. Some events are for female-identified people only and some are open to all.

The idea for Women’s Day’ came from an international conference of working women in 1910. Clara Zetkin proposed a day that combined celebration of women with action to improve their working conditions, bring about equal pay and ensure their voting rights. IN 1918 some women in the UK (aged 30+ with property) finally gained the right to vote. Today the struggle continues to achieve gender equality both here in York – recent evidence of a growing local gender pay gap is testament to that – and around the world, and to tackle the enduring challenges of gender-based violence.
