Latest Tourism Intelligence - April 2015

VisitYork4Meetings has seen a flurry of interest from conference and event buyers this year, with 123 enquiries in the first 4 months of the year (January to April); 10% higher than the same period in 2014 and an impressive 18% increase in the number of enquiries received in April alone, when 33 clients contacted the team compared to just 28 last year.

Thirteen of these conferences, meetings and events for April have already been confirmed. These events vary from academic meetings to AGMs, drinks receptions to a dinner for the Scandinavian Choir Festival. We’re also delighted to announce that the Mental Health Lawyers Association has confirmed their annual conference and AGM in York for 70 people, to be held at the National Railway Museum. More good news is our confirmation that the British Marine Federation will bring its 2 day residential meeting of 60 delegates to the Park Inn, with dinners at other venues in the city.

Other sectors performed less well in April. Although the average room rates for hotels grew from last April, by 6% to £78.25, this was at the expense of room occupancy, which was 9% lower than the previous year, at 73.6% (81% in 2014). Visitor attractions, of all sizes, saw a drop in the number of visitors through their doors (down by 6%) compared with April 2014, with city centre footfall and footfall through the Visit York Information Centre also decreasing vs the same month last year, by 1% and 20% respectively.

The trend is for fewer bookings made through, however, the average length of stay and value per booking is growing. In April the number of bookings dropped by 42% year on year, however, the individual booking value grew by 8% and length of stay grew by 15%.

There were 128,879 sessions on in April, 11% fewer year on year.

Summary for April
• 298,514 visits to attractions - down by 6% year on year
• 3,917 visits to attractions made with a York Pass, or 1.3% of all visits
• Sessions on decreased by 11% to 128,879
• 33 enquiries to VistYork4meetings conference desk – up 18%
• Average online booking value grew by 8%
• Average length of stay per online booking grew by 15%

City centre footfall – down by 11%
• 35,702 visits to Visit York’s Information Centre – down by 20% (note: overall 2014 was a record year)
