The October dashboard showed that the late half term resulted in a drop in many of the key performance indicators in October vs 2016. However October’s loss is November’s gain, and the balance has tipped back with the attractions, in particular, benefiting in November.

Overall October was a slightly quieter month than we would usually see in York, which is likely to be a result (at least in part) of half term falling late this year and local pupils not breaking up from school until the 28th of the month.

September has been a busy month for the tourism sector in York, with highest monthly hotel room occupancy rates achieved so far this year and also the greatest number of sessions on in a month in 2017.

The Visit York Information Centre has reported a very strong August this year, with footfall reaching 46,814 (5% up compared to August 2016) and several days achieving record sales figures as the team of staff and volunteers assisted all of the customers over the summer.

In July, the York Pass launched its new website, which has led to even greater sales growth off the back of an already successful year. In fact, there were more York Passes sold in July 2017 than in any other July for at least the last 5 years. This has contributed to a 29% uplift in visits to York’s attractions made with a York Pass compared to July 2016, with 12,192 visits to attractions made by a York Pass holder (or 4% of all attraction visits).

85% of York’s hotel rooms were occupied in June, which is 3% more than in June 2016 and the highest level for this time of year achieved since 2013. Average room rates also grew compared to May 2016, by 2% to £107.42 per room sold. The increases for both measures were seen across hotels with both higher and lower star ratings.

Visit York’s ‘Year of the Viking’ campaign, in partnership with JORVIK and York Museums Trust continued to reap rewards throughout May. The new ‘Viking: Rediscover the Legend’ exhibition opened at the Yorkshire Museum and with the ongoing Viking shows at York Dungeon, both of these attractions welcomed more visitors in May 2017 compared to the same period last year.

April’s highlights on the events calendar included the second York Easter Festival (14 to 17 April) and the re-opening of the JORVIK Viking Centre (8 April), both of which succeeded in bringing people into York to make the most of the city this Easter.

Easter in 2017, fell three weeks later than in 2016 (14 to 17 April, whereas in 2016 the Easter weekend fell from the 25 to 28 March. School holidays in 2017 began on either April 1 or even as late as the 8 for York, North Yorkshire and some other areas.

As a result, March visitor numbers for 2017 were lower than we saw in March 2016, simply because there were no school or Bank Holidays and several attractions waited until April to launch their new events and exhibitions or even re-open.
