PLAN TO GROW A STRONGER, MORE PROFITABLE AND SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS Running and growing a business isn’t easy. But did anyone promise it would be?

It may seem that in some cases growth just happens for some people and some businesses. My experience is that generally growth comes for one of two reasons.

1. The businesses grows through conscious decisions made by the owner or leader(s) and the effective execution of a plan. 2. The business is in the right place at the right time and they’d actually struggle not to make money in those market conditions – who wants to trust their business success to luck though?

Conscious decisions based on insight and formulated into a robust plan is what will really drive sustainable and profitable growth. Not having a plan for your growth is like drifting along with the current – you’ll end up where the current takes you, and that probably won’t be where you want to go.

When people start a business, design a new product or offer a new service, they generally do it because they recognise there is a need in the market and a demand for something different – a better widget that works faster, a better way to do something or a service for a group of customers who are not served well by the current options.

Whether that research was formal and robust or just anecdotal from ad-hoc conversations, the confidence to move forward comes from this market research and market insight. New product development (NPD) and the development of solutions for audiences is where marketing starts.

Of course, marketing then develops into formalising that product, understanding the size of the market and the size of the opportunity. Marketing helps exploit that opportunity by creating a compelling promise and then using marketing channels and tactics to put the right message in front of the right people at the right time – that’s where the marketing comms come in!
