Popular food critics like Giles Coren have been praising York’s gastronomical offer for many years now, even declaring York ‘the capital of the food universe. We couldn’t agree more! For this festive period, we have put together a list of 6 finest eateries for you to enjoy a delicious festive meal. Feeling hungry yet?

1. Roots York

Seasonal food is a speciality of Roots York, with the menu created by award-winning chef, Tommy Banks. Enjoy top choices from the ‘Feast Menu with a Festive Twist’ such as Pigs ‘cheek’ in blankets with a bread sauce, and a delightful dessert of Sticky Apple cake, brandy butter ice cream and chicory butterscotch.

2. Betty’s Café Tea Rooms

Bettys is well known amongst locals and visitors alike for their traditional must-have Afternoon Tea experience. However, this Christmas, treat your taste buds to a Chicken, Bacon & Cranberry Rösti, a festive version of the famous rösti, with Yorkshire chicken breast, Raclette, smoked streaky bacon and cranberry sauce. Pair it with a Spiced Christmas Tea - a festive blend of black China leaf tea, orange peels, lemon peels and cinnamon.

3. Le Cochon Aveugle

The menu in this restaurant changes almost daily! Cooked from only fresh produce, seasonal favourite is Whipped Chicken Liver Parfait, crispy brussel sprout leaves, kumquat and pain d’epices. Finish the meal with chef’s specialty – Spiced Apple Financier, old fashioned vanilla ice cream and goat’s milk caramel sauce. Remember to keep warm this winter with a Blood Orange Negroni.

4. Fancy Hank’s

Hank’s Christmas Dinner at one of York’s newest restaurants, promises feel-good food with a Southern twist. Enjoy American classics of roast turkey, pigs in blankets, southern gravy and sprout slaw – all with a generous serving of cranberry sauce. For a vegetarian alternative – try the Jackfruit Brunswick Stew. For an ultimate warm-up, nothing is hotter than the Arkansas Ring of Fire – a mix of spiced rum and ginger liqueur.

5. Skosh

Cutting straight to dessert, Skosh is the one restaurant in York where the Christmas baubles are good enough to eat. The Skosh Chocolate Bauble, served with seasonal fresh fruit, is surely one of the finest desserts in the country – a dish with a conscience, as 20% of sales are donated to Myeloma UK. A delicious Spiced Damson Vodka Cocktail, with vodka infused with the flavour of local damson plums, is the perfect aperitif or after-dinner drink.

6. The Whippet Inn

As you’d expect from a restaurant named after a hunting dog, game is top of the Christmas menu: Three Bird Ballotine features turkey, duck & a pheasant pork stuffing wrapped in Prosciutto ham with a cranberry, nutmeg & brioche sauce. Ideally, this should be washed down with their own blend of ‘Mauled Cider’.
