“O’ Tell Me the Truth about Love”, wrote W.H. Auden in his famous poem of the same name. Born in York in 1907, W.H.Auden is one of the most quoted 20th century poets in the world on the subject of love. Love and romance come in many different guises, that much is certainly the truth. For the most romantic time of the year we suggest five different things to do in York on Valentine’s Day.

Heart of Yorkshire

1 - Kiss under the Heart of Yorkshire

York Minster is undoubtedly one of the most iconic attractions in York and this beautiful gothic masterpiece holds a special place in the heart of visitors from across the world.

When you visit be sure to look up at the west window and see the heart-shaped “Heart of Yorkshire”  worked into the tracery. If you are sure the person you are with is ‘the one’ be sure to kiss them and you’ll remain together forever, according to local superstition.

Countess of York

2 - Afternoon tea on board the Victorian Carriage

Railways are an important part of York’s heritage. The city boasts a beautiful, Victorian railway station – could there be a more perfect setting for farewells or reunions? York is also home to the world’s largest railway museum. The museum also offers the most romantic afternoon tea experience aboard an  authentic. beautifully restored rail carriage—the Countess of York. Homemade cakes and traditional Yorkshire scones with a glass of bubbly – what can be a more perfect meal for two on Valentine’s Day?

Dirty Dancing

3 - Cinema date night at City Screen

Romance is in the air in York City Screen. Everyone knows that date night is movie night. Snuggle up with a loved one and watch lovey-dovey big screen classic “Dirty Dancing”. This timeless, Oscar winning classic is a phenomenally popular coming-of-age tale beloved by generations - Johnny teaches Baby how to dance and, more importantly, how to love. Is there anything more romantic than love, passion, dance and Patrick Swayze?

City Cruises York

4 - Cruise along the Ouse

Impress your better half on Valentine’s Day in York with a fascinating and romantic river cruise. Sit back, relax and enjoy a cruise along the Ouse, drinking fizz and sharing Valentine Day’s best gift – chocolate, taking in York’s beautiful scenic views in the arms of your valentine.

Sunset over City Walls - Lewis Outing image

5 - Watch the sunset from the city walls

Sunsets are romantic anywhere, but in York you can have a truly magical experience like no other. On Valentine’s Day this year sun will set just after 5pm. So grab a hot chocolate, join the walls off Lendal Bridge and walk towards Micklegate Bar over the Station Road. You will be rewarded with colourful skies and lovely atmosphere. For the most breathtaking view, however, turn back to watch the sunset over the York Minster, when the last sun rays of the day paint the cathedral gold.
