News Release - Issued by National Trust

York Curiouser in the Treasurer’s House Garden

From this Saturday, a number of porcelain sandwiches will be hidden around the Treasurer’s House garden as part of the city-wide York Curiouser festival, celebrating the tucked away places of York. The contemporary art pieces have been created by ceramicist Karen Thompson, who is one of nine artists commissioned to install artwork throughout the city for passers-by to stumble upon. From Saturday 14 June until Monday 7 July, visitors to Treasurer’s House will find the porcelain sandwiches, which are to scale and white in colour, on benches and in nooks and crannies around the garden.

Lisa Holden, Visitor Services Manager said:

“We’re delighted to be involved with York Curiouser this year. Treasurer’s House has a beautiful garden that’s free to enter, which both locals and visitors often enjoy to eat their lunch or simply listen to the Minster bells."

The York Curiouser festival overlaps with a number of summer events in the Treasurer’s House garden, including The Fairy-Queen opera performed by Eboracum Baroque on the 21 June and a pop-up café for the Tour de France on the 6 July. Visitors to these events will have the added surprise of porcelain sandwiches as they enjoy the alfresco festivities.

Lara Goodband, Artistic Director of York Curiouser said:

“The York Curiouser project will be taking place across numerous locations city-wide, highlighting the snickets and quiet corners of York. Karen Thompson’s porcelain sandwiches will be situated in discreet places around the Treasurer’s House garden, so as to tickle visitors’ curiosity and to represent, in Karen’s words, ‘ancient associations coming together with a contemporary twist.’”

Treasurer’s House is open daily 11am – 4.30pm, closed Fridays and admission to the garden is free. On Sunday 6 July, the house will be closed, although the garden will be open with our pop-up café between 6am and 12 noon.
