News Release - Issued by York Theatre Royal

York Theatre Royal

York Theatre Royal is delighted to receive the news that the organisation has been awarded £2,850,000 towards its £4.1 million Redevelopment Project.

The Award from Arts Council England is the most significant investment in the Theatre since the 1967 foyer extension. The Theatre will close next March for eight months, during which time the foyer space will be increased, the auditorium reconfigured and refurbished and the whole building made more accessible.

Chief Executive Liz Wilson and Artistic Director Damian Cruden said;

This is fantastic news for the Theatre and the citizens of York. We are very grateful for this investment from Arts Council England, which shows a real commitment to the City and the future of our organisation. A theatre has been operating on this site for 270 years and this award means we can continue that tradition. We look forward to sharing our plans over the coming months

In other good news, the Theatre also received confirmation of its continued status as a National Portfolio Organisation (NPO), meaning that it will receive an annual grant from Arts Council England to support its work over the next three years. Of this news, Liz Wilson, Chief Executive said

“York Theatre Royal is very proud to continue as a National Portfolio Organisation funded through Arts Council England. Coupled with news on our Capital Award we now have the opportunity to plan for what will be the most significant few years in the Theatres’ history. “

NB The Theatre will be issuing a formal press call for Monday July 14 where the full plans for the Redevelopment and the Theatres’ activity during closure will be shared.
