York Racecourse welcomes Paddington Bear

York Racecourse is excited to announce a new special guest for Sunday 4 September when Paddington Bear will be at the races, for the first time.

Probably Peru’s most famous expat, Paddington Bear has been much loved since first appearing in print back in 1958. The creation of Michael Bond has charmed television and more recently, big screen, audiences for generations.

Paddington Bear is set to appear at intervals on the Edwardian Weighing Room Lawn during the afternoon and the fact that Course Enclosure combines with Grandstand and Paddock on this day means that everyone has the chance to see him. There will be marmalade sandwiches to enjoy and hopefully red wellingtons and duffle coats will only be needed as dressing up outfits.

Fun for all, is the theme of Press Family Sunday, which also includes seven thoroughbred races plus a Charles Owen Pony race at the beginning of the card. There is also the interactive racing zone and bouncy castles.

There is a special relaxed feel about the only Sunday of York’s year; it naturally attracts a family crowd when under 18's go for free and the County Stand dress code is relaxed.

Once again Grandstand & Paddock and Course Enclosure will be combined in a single admission for just £9 on the early bird deal (under 18s are free). Racegoers will still be able to bring a traditional picnic to enjoy on the bank in Course Enclosure, take advantage of our special “picnic hamper cloakroom” and then cross over to see the horses and Paddington Bear close up.

On the racecourse itself there are likely to be some close finishes as the handicaps flash past the line and in the past the day has seen a 100-1 winner!

The natural rhythm of a raceday allows plenty of time to get something to eat and drink as well as providing room for quality time with the family. A wide range of additional entertainments will ensure a happy day out for all ages.
