News Release – Issued by York Maze

York to Host International Giant Pumpkin Competition

Following the success of last year’s inaugural North of England stage of the International Giant Pumpkin Commonwealth (GPC) competition held at York Maze, organisers have confirmed that the this year’s North of England final will once again be held at York Maze as part of their Halloween Festival.

Last year’s competition was won by Mal Carter from Middlesbrough whose monster fruit tipped the scales at 1025lb (465kg), about the same weight as five baby elephants, to take first place and £500 cash.

Ian Paton, UK record breaking pumpkin grower and European representative of the GPC says, “The GPC is recognised internationally as the home of giant pumpkin growing, and we are delighted to once again be able to offer growers in the North of England an official site where their giant pumpkins can be weighed.”

Says Tom Pearcy from York Maze, “We will continue to offer the UK’s biggest prize in pumpkin growing with £2000 for anyone who can set a new UK record. As the official GPC site for the North of England, anyone entering a pumpkin in the York Maze Halloween festival will also be eligible for the European and international prizes with a prize of up to $6000 for a world record breaking pumpkin.”

Vegetable growers across the region are being encouraged to get planting their giant pumpkin seeds now.

Says Tom Pearcy “We had over a dozen entries in last year’s competition but we’d like to see even more especially from children. Now is the time to start planting pumpkin seeds ready for October and we have advice on how to grow a record breaker on the York Maze Halloween website.”

Anyone who sets a new UK record at the York Maze Halloween event will win £2000. If the record isn’t broken the heaviest pumpkin on display at York Maze will win £500, with £250 for the second and £100 for third places. The biggest pumpkin grown by a child will win £50 with goody bags for runners up and all children entering a pumpkin in the competition will get free entry to the York Maze Halloween festival on the pumpkin competition day Saturday 24 October 2015.
