News Release – Issued by City of York Council

Free Parking in York – Saturday 1st February 2014

Free Parking in all York Council owned car parks

City of York Council will be giving free car-parking all day and evening in City of York Council-owned car parks on Saturday 1st February 2014.

City of York Council are committed to supporting businesses within the city, and the free parking day is one initiative to draw customers into the city centre. Traditionally, January and February are quiet months and a time when businesses will welcome the expected increase in footfall that free parking will bring.

Speaking about the initiative, the Council Leader, Cllr James Alexander said, “We promised to do something as a parking initiative to help retailers and other city-centre businesses. This is a time of year when businesses most need a boost, as we all know how quiet the city can be in the post-Christmas period.”

Frank Wood, Chair of the Retail Forum in the city agreed. Speaking from his premises in Goodramgate, Mr Wood said, “York city-centre has an enviable reputation for being a key shopping destination, but retailers do experience a lull in trade generally just after Christmas. I welcome and support this initiative from the Council and will be pleased to work with them to promote the Free Parking Day to all potential customers who might come in and shop.”

The car parks that will be free to use on Saturday 1st February are: Bishopthorpe Road, Bootham Row, Castle, Castle Mills, Esplanade, Foss Bank, Haymarket, Marygate, Monkbar, Nunnery Lane, Piccadilly, St George’s Field and Union Terrace.
