Auditions start for York Minster Mystery Plays 2016

Auditions to decide the stars of next summer’s York Minster Mystery Plays start at the cathedral on Wednesday 25 November.

More than 220 community performers applied to be part of the cast for the production, which will be staged at the Minster next May for the first time in 16 years and only the second time in the Plays’ history.

Roles being recruited for the production include key parts like Adam, Eve, Noah and Satan, as well as a range of supporting parts.

Applicants are now being given the chance to impress at the first round of auditions, which run from Wednesday 25 to Sunday 29 November, with call-backs for leading roles due to take place in December.

Phillip Breen, Director of the York Minster Mystery Plays 2016, said: “A community cast will be at the heart of our production and we’ve had an overwhelming response from York’s amateur theatre community.

“It’s exciting to now be at the audition stage and we’re looking forward to meeting our future performers and getting to know them in a totally unpressurised environment.

“We’re inviting people to spend ten minutes doing something they love and which shows them off to the best of their ability – whether it’s a reading, poem, song or something totally different. We just really want to get to know each person and for them to enjoy the experience.”

In keeping with tradition, the talented amateur cast will support one professional actor for the five-week run of performances, which start on 26 May – the feast of Corpus Christi – and close on 30 June.

The 800-year old Minster’s cavernous Nave will be transformed into a 1,000 seater auditorium for the production, which promises to be a fantastic spectacle in an extraordinary setting.

Tickets for the production go on sale at 9.30am on Wednesday 13 January. For more information, visit and follow #mysteryplays.
