Spectacular Winter and Christmas Lights Switch On in York

  • Christmas Tree Lights switched on by panto stars in St Helen’s Square
  • First night of late night shopping and bigger and better St Nicholas Fair
  • New - Christmas in the Museum Gardens Experience
  • Enhanced Winter Lighting – thousands of LED lights light up historic bar walls
  • Lendal and Ouse bridges lit for first time

A sparkling evening in York is promised on Thursday 16 November, when the Christmas Tree lights in St Helen’s Square will be switched on by BBC Radio York and BBC Look North Presenter, Clare Frisby with the Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Barbara Boyce and panto stars Berwick Kaler and Martin Barrass, performing in Jack and the Beanstalk at York Theatre Royal. A magical winter light experience, using over 160,000 LED lights, will see the city awash with lights in white and warm white, creating a beautiful and magical atmosphere in keeping with the architecture of the city. This year’s best ever city-wide lighting display has been organised by the York BID in partnership with Make It York.

Approximate timings for the lighting switch on will be:

16:00 Minster FM/Make It York will be setting up stage
17:45 Stage opens – Ben and Ellie, Minster FM Breakfast Presenters –
Welcome and games
18:00 Lucy’s Pop Choir sing (20 mins)
18:20 Brass Band plays (20 Mins)
18:40 Ben and Ellie build up to special guests
18:45 BBC Radio York and BBC Look North Presenter, Clare Frisby takes to stage then invites guests on stage.

  • 15km of lights (if laid end to end)
  • 160,000 individual LED lights
  • Illumination of bridges, lamp columns and buildings
  • 100 artificial 4ft tress with lights
  • Three real Christmas trees: St Helen’s Square, Parliament Street and Shambles Market
