York school children get creative to celebrate JORVIK Viking Festival

Pupils from Hob Moor Oaks School were challenged by The Grand Hotel & Spa - Yorkshire’s only AA-rated five-star hotel - to create their very own longboat to mark The JORVIK Viking Festival and The Grand’s Viking Feast.

Four classes took part, each designing a longboat using paint, fabric and crafts. Following a lengthy judging process, Woods Class was announced the winner of the competition - the class will have their longboat featured at The Grand’s Viking Feast on Friday 16th February and will also receive a tour of The Grand Hotel & Spa as well as a meal at The Rise, the hotel’s Yorkshire tapas-style small plates restaurant. The other two longboats created will be on display throughout The Grand during the week of The JORVIK Viking Festival.

Gemma Scoreby, Teaching Assistant at Hob Moor Oaks School, said: “The JORVIK Viking Festival has inspired the children to get creative and learn more about the city’s past, bringing key events in history to life. Our pupils really enjoyed creating the longboats and can’t wait to see them on display in The Grand Hotel & Spa.”

Philip Bolson, General Manager at The Grand Hotel & Spa, said: “We are thrilled that Hob Moor Oaks School pupils had so much fun creating the longboats for our Viking Feast. We love working with the local community and we’re so proud to be displaying these fantastic pieces of art.”

Frances Bennett, Interpretation and Engagement Manager at The JORVIK Group, operators of The JORVIK Viking Festival, comments: “We are really pleased to have our local schools getting involved with JORVIK Viking Festival. Our Viking Arnleif was lucky enough to be a judge for the longboat competition and we were so impressed with the level of creativity on display.”

The Grand Viking Feast is £75 per person and includes a drink on arrival, a three-course meal, along with mead tasting stations and Viking inspired songs and competitions. The event is adults only and booking is necessary as spaces are limited.
