Dog lovers throughout North Yorkshire are expected to descend on Castle Howard this weekend (Saturday 30 November and Sunday 1 December), when the garden centre hosts a special event welcoming canine visitors to meet Santa Paws for the perfect festive photo!

“For parents of young children, the annual photograph with Father Christmas is a seasonal tradition, and as a nation of dog lovers, we wanted to extend that opportunity to those bringing four-legged visitors,” comments head of marketing, Abbigail Ollive.  “Visitors can take souvenir photos with their own cameras or phones, and Santa will be sure to have plenty of tasty treats to reward canine visitors large or small who manage the perfect pose!  Whether you are looking for the ultimate Instagram selfie with your dog, or the perfect photo for the front of your Christmas card, this is a brilliant way to mark the start of the festive season.”

Santa Paws will be in his sleigh in the garden centre each day from 11am to 4pm, and there’s no charge for the photo opportunity. The garden centre stocks a wide range of dog accessories, toys and treats, from cosy beds to new collars, squeaky toys to delicious treats that will keep any dog quiet whilst its owners enjoy Christmas dinner.  This season’s cut and rooted Christmas trees are also in stock, as well as a range of artificial trees, decorations and seasonal flowers, including colourful poinsettias.

“Castle Howard is always a favourite with dogs and their owners – the grounds are fantastic for long walks at any time of the year, and if you catch the butchers in the farm shop at the right time, they are happy to provide bones free of charge,” adds Abbi.  “With delicious hot drinks and cakes in our dog-friendly Courtyard Café, this can be a real treat for two- and four-legged visitors.”

Of course, children are also very well catered-for at Castle Howard, with the last few tickets available for An Audience with Father Christmas in the house itself, and the drop-in Santa’s Grotto in the cosy Courtyard Grotto open every weekend until Christmas from 11.45am on Saturday 30 November.  No pre-booking is required for the Courtyard Grotto, with timed slots bookable when visitors arrive at the Ticket Office.  Tickets to the Grotto, which include a small gift from Santa’s workshop, are £8 per child plus normal admission for either House & Gardens to experience ‘A Christmas Masquerade’ or gardens only, which includes access to the new Skelf Island playground.

Castle Howard: A Christmas Masquerade runs from Saturday 16 November 2019 until Sunday 5 January 2020 (closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day).  Tickets available online from £20 (Adult), £19 (Concession) £11.50 (Child) Family tickets available.  Prebooking is strongly recommended with 10% off tickets booked online in advance, visit  Winter gardens-only tickets are £9.95 for adults, £9.00 for concessions and £7.95 for children, with family tickets available for £18 (one adult and up to three children) or £28 (two adults and up to three children).
