Finalists in the Visit York tourism awards, sponsored by LNER, have been revealed today, celebrating English Tourism Week.  Now 57 businesses will go head to head to win one of 16 trophies, and be named best in York.    The prestigious awards will return on Thursday 20 June to shine a spotlight on excellence in York’s tourism sector and reward outstanding service, innovation and quality.

The event is a fantastic platform to showcase tourism businesses to a 450 strong audience from across York’s tourism sector.  There are 16 categories, including two new ones: Tourism Supplier of the Year and Innovation in Tourism.

These prestigious ‘Tourism Oscars of the North’ will be compered by Minster FM Breakfast Presenter Ben Fry and held in the Great Hall of the National Railway Museum, where guests will rub shoulders with railway legends, from history-makers to record-breakers.

Paul Whiting, Head of Visit York, a part of Make It York, said: “York’s tourism sector is vibrant and flourishing.  Together we’re committed to offering the highest quality of hospitality and experience to our 6.9 million visitors every year.  These awards will reward those businesses who are truly exceptional in their field.”

David Horne, Managing Director, LNER, said:  “We’re delighted to partner with Visit York to support the city’s annual tourism awards.  York is one of the most successful tourism destinations in the UK and we’re proud to help so many visitors travel to the region.  The city has a lot to offer visitors and at just under two hours from London, there is great potential to increase our audience reach in the capital and right along the LNER route.”

Bridget Meynell, MD, Minster FM and Chair of the Judging panel said: “Every year businesses seem to set the bar higher and higher and the quality of entries this year is no exception.  Choosing the winners is going to be a really difficult task.”

Taking place in spring each year and run in association with VisitEngland, English Tourism Week campaigns to raise the profile of the industry and celebrate the value and quality of tourism in England.  The visitor economy in England is worth £106 billion a year supporting thousands of businesses and impacting on the performance of supplier industries such as restaurants, pubs, farming, transport, retailing, sport, museums and galleries, the theatre and other performing arts.
