In York you’ll find something to photograph or film at every turn. Beautiful architecture and historic buildings from every period in history add to the city’s ambience and make it a favourite with film producers.
The Romans knew York as Eboracum, to the Saxons it was Eoforwick and to the Vikings it was Jorvik. For TV and film producers, it is a treasure trove of unique locations you won’t find anywhere else in the UK.
York Minster, the largest Gothic cathedral north of the Alps, towers over a scattering of medieval architecture and Georgian townhouses, and the city is home to a fine example of a Victorian railway station - which also provides excellent transport links to the rest of the UK, London can be reached in just under two hours.
Within the ancient, encircling walls, York’s medieval streets and buildings are beautifully preserved and the historic heart of the city is largely traffic-free, making it quiet, clean and accessible for film and TV crews, day and night.
Visit York is committed to the Film Friendly Partnership Charter – along with the City of York Council and Screen Yorkshire.
