About us

A very warm welcome awaits you in Pickering, an attractive and historic market town on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. Pickering is reputed to be the oldest town in the district, dating back to 270 BC when founded by Peredurus, King of the Brigantes.

Pickering is a tourist centre and as such has numerous attractions and events where visitors can enjoy themselves.

At the top of the sloping market place, where a busy street market takes place on Mondays, is the parish church of St. Peter and St. Paul where 15th century murals decorate the walls, and whose spire dominates the skyline.

At the bottom of the market place is the North Yorkshire Moors Railway station where you can board the 18-mile steam railway running through the spectacular scenery of the North York Moors National Park and to Whitby on the Yorkshire coast and the station at Goathland has featured in the Harry Potter films and TV's Heartbeat.

For those wanting to know more about the history of Pickering there is Beck Isle Museum with its fascinating collection of artefacts showing the social history of the area mainly from the Victorian era and a collection of local photographs by Sidney Smith.

Pickering Castle lies to the north, a splendid example of a 12th century motte and bailey construction, and which was once also a royal hunting lodge.

The traditional Monday market, a monthly farmer's market, a daily indoor market plus car boot sales held regularly in and around the town offer excellent opportunities for bargain hunting. The local independent shops, selling quality goods and in many cases local and fair-trade produce are complemented by excellent cafes and hostelries. Pickering's antique shops are legendary and the auction rooms offer both value and entertainment.

A range of activities and events are organised by the town’s attractions and community groups. The Pickering 60s Festival in June features live music from both headline and local bands with parades, classic vehicles and much more. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is host to the very popular War Weekend in October which revives the 1940’s glamour, look, feel, smells and sights consists of parades, re-enactors and much more fun!

Positioned between the coast, forest, moors and York, Pickering is an attractive base for exploring this popular area of North Yorkshire.
