About us

Nestled in between the Moors, Wolds and Howardian Hills, Malton is a charming market town with eclectic shopping, amazing food and set in some of North Yorkshire’s most beautiful countryside.

The towns of Malton and Norton stand on the banks of the River Derwent and have been the historic centre of Ryedale since Roman times, when a 22 acre legionary fort – Derventio at what is now Orchard Fields, was established in AD70.

In recent times Malton has been making a name for itself as a food town built around its famous local produce and now home to the award-winning monthly food markets, annual food lovers festival and some of the best food shops in Yorkshire. The town has a growing community of artisan producers, two new breweries, a burgeoning restaurant scene including James Martin’s Restaurant at the Talbot hotel and a cookery school opening soon!

Malton is host to a weekly market on Saturday's and one of the biggest livestock markets in the north of England. Farmers markets and Food Lovers markets are also held monthly and offer fine local produce from the surrounding area attracting internationally famous chefs and food writers. An eclectic mix of architectural styled shops, tearooms, restaurants and cinema surround the market place, in the middle of which stands St. Michael’s church. The Milton Rooms stages a range of acts throughout the year. Streets leading from the market place are also popular shopping thoroughfares and home to many independent local retailers, Wheelgate, Yorkersgate and Castlegate to name but a few.

The town is served by two independent hotels, the recently refurbished Talbot hotel has Malton-born James Martin overseeing all aspects of the food serving the best of Yorkshire on a plate at his restaurant in the bar, drawing room and the atrium. The Old Lodge at the opposite side of town is a stunning Tudor mansion set in beautiful grounds backing on to the Castle Gardens, a five acre public park.

It is from these lodgings that makes Malton an excellent base to visit some of the county’s most popular visitor attractions. On the edge of Malton is Eden Camp, a unique museum of social life in the Second World War. To the west the beautiful facades of Castle Howard familiar to many as the Brideshead from Brideshead Revisited, is perhaps the most spectacular country house in the North of England. A few miles to the north Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo is one of the UK’s most popular attractions.

Come and spend a weekend shopping, eating and enjoying Yorkshire’s Food Capital!
