Explore one of England's most magnificent houses, Castle Howard, situated just 15 miles outside of York. From awe-inspiring architecture and grand interiors to sweeping parkland dotted with lakes, temples, and formal gardens, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Built over 300 years ago by Sir John Vanbrugh for the 3rd Earl of Carlisle, today Castle Howard remains home to the Howard family. Discover our rich and varied history, from royal visits, film stars, and pre-Raphaelite artists to architectural firsts, great fires, and the challenges of preserving the house and estate for the future.

Free-flowing tours of the house allow groups to explore at their leisure, with friendly and knowledgeable guides throughout happy to share our stories. Explore our beautiful gardens with meandering woodland paths, lakeside terraces, and walled garden with ornamental potager as well as seasonal displays of roses, daffodils, bluebells, and rhododendrons. Free daily outdoor tours, from March to October, offer further opportunity to explore.

A range of cafes and restaurants offer something for all tastes and budgets, with pre-booked private lunches and afternoon teas available for groups. Leave time to browse the shops, including gift shop, farm shop, and garden centre. Our changing program of events includes our Autumn flower & harvest festival and Christmas opening. Private talks and tours can be pre-arranged and tailored to suit your group's interests for a unique day out.
