About us

Established in 1987 York Against Cancer was set up to improve cancer services in York. During this time the charity has funded research at the Jack Birch Unit at the Biology department within the University of York specifically looking at bladder cancer. It also provides information about cancer awareness and prevention within the education aims. YAC also gives sunhats to every reception aged child in the area making them aware of the harm the sun can do to their skin. Cancer care is a big part of what YAC does and it has funded many care and support projects, recently we have purchased a second respite property in Filey (a four bedroomed house), this will be used to provide short respite breaks to over one hundred families per year just as the Whitby apartment (four bedroomed apartment) has done for the last 4 years. 2017 will see the YAC Mobile Chemotherapy Unit on the roads of North Yorkshire. The one million pound project will take chemotherapy to patients who live in the smaller town within the York and Scarborough hospital trust area. This will make a massive difference to patients who normally would have to travel to receive their treatment. It will also increase service levels at York hospital ensuring patients receive their treatment in a timely manner.
