About

New from August 2019: Guided Tours. From Wednesday to Saturday join a 30 minute guided tour, and let our expert guides lead you through the secrets of the house, ending up in the Historic Kitchen for one of our incredible cooking demonstrations. Free with admission, join us at 11am and 2pm (subject to guide availability).

A masterpiece of Georgian architecture, York Mansion House is a celebration of the city it inhabits. Built in 1732 as a home for the Lord Mayor of York, the Mansion House has been at the centre of York society and civic life ever since. An indulgent space designed for entertaining, and even hosting royalty – should they come to call – this beautiful home is now an inspiring, interactive journey through York’s past and present.

Across four floors, take an audio visual guide and walk through the expansive Dining Room and majestic State Room, and hear the stories of scandal and decadence of those who came before. Follow the sweeping staircase throughout the house, bypassing the intimate Drawing Room, flooded with light; galleries housing a fascinating collection of civic silver, still used today, that tells the story of York; and shadowy rooms filled with robes of Lord Mayors.

Moving downstairs, discover the working, historically recreated Georgian kitchen, complete with winding passages of pantries and store-cupboards. As we dip into our banqueting archives, join us for cooking demonstrations at 11:30am and 2:30pm everyday, and watch the house come to life as the fire is lit and delicious smells creep up the narrow stairs.

For your little ones, a world of treasure hunting awaits. From dragons and swords, to surprises hidden in secret drawers and behind paintings, pick up a trail and let them lead you on an adventure. With interactives in every room bringing history to life, and an immersive, digital cooking experience, there is enough to keep them entertained for as long as you need.
