Spot the L.S. Lowry’s, Turner or Hockney and surround yourself with some of the best ceramic art in the world at one of the UK’s best regional galleries.
An £8 million development in 2015 saw it shortlisted for the Art Fund Museum of the Year and the European Museum of the Year as the whole building was transformed to include 60% more exhibition space and an Artist’s Garden. The gallery now has three exhibition spaces on the ground floor, capable of hosting major national and international exhibitions, and four on the first floor, including two galleries which are home to the Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA), which showcases our internationally significant collection of British Studio Ceramics.
An additional new entrance to the gallery was created at the rear of the building, leading down into the Artists Garden and the Edible Wood.
Exhibitions:
Michael Lyons: Ancient and Modern
This exhibition brings together nine large scale sculptures by internationally acclaimed artist Michael Lyons in a major new outdoor exhibition. Lyons, who sadly died earlier this year, worked from Cawood, North Yorkshire, and this is the first major exhibition of his work in York.
In addition to this, visitors can now enjoy fantastic local food from Sketch by Origen at the gallery, brand new customer facilities, a garden area that has never been opened up to the public before and an exciting new programme of activities and events.
York Mediale 2020: Human Nature
21st October – 9th May 2021
£10 Adults / £5 Children / £8 Students, Universal Credit, York Residents / Free for YMT members and Friends of York Art Gallery.
A triptych of installations under the banner of Human Nature come together as the ambitious centrepiece of York Mediale 2020.
Jointly curated by York Mediale and York Museums Trust, visitors will discover how the human body is hardwired, synchronised and inextricably linked to nature.
Fresh from their show at the Saatchi Gallery in London, Marshmallow Laser Feast’s new installation Tides Within Us explores the journey of oxygen from lungs to the heart and body in a series of installations that echo natural ecosystems.
Embers and the Giants from Canadian media artist Kelly Richardson makes its UK premiere, a short film examining human intervention on nature, referencing the destruction of forest areas and dwindling numbers of fireflies.
Celebrated fine artist Rachel Goodyear continues her exploration into animation-based work with Limina, a series of new animations complemented by delicate drawings displayed alongside a newly conserved marble sculpture from York Art Gallery’s collection. Collectively, her work offers an intriguing glimpse into the psyche and fragments of the unconscious.
* From 1 August 2020 York Art Gallery will be open Wednesdays to Sundays from 11am-4pm. Please note that the last arrival slot each day will be 3pm to 3.30pm.
