About us

Newby Hall, the family home of Mr & Mrs Richard Compton, is one of England's finest houses, an exceptional example of 18th century interior decoration. Built in the 1690s in the style of Sir Christopher Wren the house was later enlarged and adapted by John Carr and subsequently Robert Adam. The superb contents of the house, collected by Weddell, ancestor of the Compton family, on the Grand Tour include a rare set of Gobelin Tapestries, a gallery of classical statuary and some of Chippendale's finest furniture.

The Shop @ Newby Hall

'The Shop @ Newby Hall' is a space dedicated to modern British art, design and craftsmenship.

Gardens at Newby Hall

Award winning gardens, Adam's House, Woodland Walk, large children's Adventure garden and miniature railway.

Tea Time Shoppers Ticket

We have had many requests from local residents and visitors to be able to visit the Garden Restaurant and Shop@Newby without paying admission into the gardens so we are now offering the Tea Time Shoppers Ticke.

The National Collection of Cornus

Newby Hall’s National Collection of Cornus was started by Mr Robin Compton VMH in 1990. He was an astute Plantsman with a particular passion for trees and shrubs and was already familiar with the genus Cornus

Herbaceous Border

The beautiful double herbaceous border, a length of 140m, is one of the longest in Europe. Structurally laid out by Major Compton in the 1930s, it was during the time of Mr Robin Compton that the borders took on their unique planting feel.
