Holgate Windmill is a fully restored and working 18th-century corn mill about 1.5 miles (2km) west of York city centre. Visitors can explore four floors and when wind permits see the sails turning and operating the machinery inside the building. Access to all floors is by fixed ladders with handrails.
Stoneground wholemeal and spelt flour milled here is available for sale.
In 2020 the mill was due to celebrate its 250th anniversary (built in 1770). Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the planned series of special events has been postponed to *2022*. [Information updated autumn 2020.]
Open days. The mill is normally open to the public on one weekend in January, one weekend in February, on Easter Monday, then on Saturday and Sunday on two weekends per month from May to October; also on some bank holidays. Opening times are 11am to 4pm.
*All open days for the rest of the 2020 season are CANCELLED* because the restricted space inside the building makes it impossible to ensure compliance with social distancing regulations.
Santa in the Mill is an annual Christmas event, CANCELLED in 2020 because of social distancing restrictions in the small building.
The mill will not be open to visitors before Easter 2021. [Information updated autumn 2020.]
**Still open in 2020!** The mill shop is open every Saturday morning throughout the year from 10am to 12 noon, for sales of flour only.
