Fountains Abbey

About

More than just an abbey

For centuries people have been drawn to this inspiring place. From humble beginnings, the magnificent abbey was established by devout monks seeking a simpler existence. The atmospheric ruins that remain give us a glimpse into a way of life which shaped the medieval world. When the socially ambitious John Aislabie inherited Studley Royal, he set about creating an elegant water garden of mirror-like ponds, statues and follies, incorporating the romantic ruins into his design. Green lawns stretch down to the riverside, a perfect spot for a picnic. Riverside paths lead to the deer-park, home to Red, Fallow and Sika deer and ancient trees; limes, oaks, and sweet chestnuts. One-of-a-kind, this special place is now recognised as a World Heritage Site. Note: cared for in partnership with English Heritage.

Family fun at Fountains Abbey

Families can look out for trails and crafts every school holiday. Make sure to pop by the large play area, too! With a wooden abbey to climb all over, swings, roundabout and zipwire little legs can be entertained for hours. It's only a minutes walk from the visitor centre and restaurant so parents can settle down on picnic tables with a cup of tea or coffee.

Fountains Abbey year round

There's something to do here all year round, whether you love walking through the seasons or bringing the family for different activities. Come along for spring to enjoy the Easter trail, run wild through summer holidays with crafts and trails and join us for our anual Fountains by Floodlight event. Spend a day here this Christmas getting in the festive spirit.

Eating and shopping

There's a large restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, daily specials. Studley and abbey tea-rooms in spectacular settings. Large visitor centre shop selling homeware, garden ware, plants, books and artisan products. Smaller shop at Studley entrance. Picnics welcome.

Dogs

Welcome on leads. You can find water bowls at tea rooms and admission points. If you forget poo bags, pick a spare up from admissions or they're available to buy in the shop. Please be aware that it's a large site and on hot days you may need to carry extra water for them.

Getting around
A complimentary minibus service is provided for less mobile visitors and runs between the three entry points on a regular basis. Battery cars can also be hired – please ring in advance to check availability.
