About Us

DIG offers you a unique archaeological adventure to get you on your way to becoming a real archaeologist! Owned by the same archaeologists who discovered the Viking-age City and created JORVIK Viking Centre, this is a one of a kind experience!

“One of the best family days out. No other experience gets you as close to the excitement of archaeological discovery.” The One Show’s Dan Snow.

At DIG, you get to discover only the most exciting archaeological artefacts from the 2000 years of history hidden under the streets of York. Our four excavation pits are filled with Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian finds, so you can grab a trowel and dig up the clues that show how people lived in these times.

Pre-booking your visit online, or by calling 01904 615505 is advisable.

Please visit our website for information on accessibility.

DIG Deeper

DIG deeper into the stories of York’s archaeology with adult-only tours, running every afternoon in term time.

Soundmarks

DIG's NEW exhibition is available now! Soundmarks provides a unique perspective on the Roman remains hidden beneath the ground at Aldborough Roman Site. The current installation is the first of two Soundmarks projects hosted by DIG. In February 2024 a new exhibition inspired by the latest research into the Roman archaeology of York will premiere in DIG’s exhibition space.

Educational visits

We are delighted to offer Covid-19 secure school visits, which comply with all of the requirements of the We're Good To Go certification so that educational groups can continue to enjoy hands-on archaeology. This includes offering exclusive use of the DIG building for your visit to maintain 'bubbles'. Contact our Reservations department directly by phone (01904 615505) or email schools@yorkat.co.uk for details.

If you want an interactive archaeological experience but are unable to visit at the moment, we have created a Virtual Outreach programme which brings archaeologists into your classroom using virtual meeting technology. For more details, click here.
