About us

17th century house where James Cook lodged as apprentice seaman to Whitby shipmaster Captain John Walker. Stunning site on harbourside. 

Rich permanent collection with much original 18th century material, Including period rooms in meticulously restored house, ship models, plans and manuscripts, artifacts from the voyages, and fine original paintings, drawings and prints. Special temporary exhibition with exhibits drawn from other Institutions. The special exhibition in 2018, on all season, is 'Whitby in the time of Cook, the Making of a Great Seaman'.

Allow 2 hours for a Group Visit. Introductory session about Cook, Whitby, his ships, and his discoveries, by an experienced guide. Guides on hand for tour of museum. Schools visits tailored to age group and curriculum. All Group Visits pre-booked through our Operations Manager, Maria Aparicio. Please discuss with her the visit format most suitable for your Group

Opening Times

We accept groups during the winter when we are officially closed - at a mutually agreed date and time. If your Group would like to visit outside the published times, we can be flexible.

Guide Prices

Adult groups £5.10 per person
School & student groups, £3 per pupil. Accompanying teachers & coach drivers free

From York, take the A64 & A169 north-east to Whitby. From Scarborough, take the A171 north to Whitby.From Teesside, take the A171 east to Whitby.Follow signs to Park and Ride (best from Teesside or Pickering or park in Town Centre car parks. The museum is on the east side of the swing bridge over the River Esk, take immediate right turn onto Grape Lane. Museum is on the right hand side at the far end.Accessible by Public Transport: Whitby station is 0 miles away.
