Free Open Day at Fishergate Postern Tower on Saturday 16th July!
Visit the fascinating 500 year-old Fishergate Postern Tower on Saturday, 16th July for FREE!
Walk the famous York Walls (also free!), and make your way to the wonderful stretch of the Walls from Piccadilly to the Red Tower at Foss Islands. You'll find Fishergate Postern Tower, where you can climb the stone spiral staircase and explore three floors of amazing history! The Friends of York Walls volunteers open the tower for visitors on many ocasions throughout the year, and can talk you through its fascinating history, showing you the 'Tudor Toilet' (always a favourite with children!), and the incredible wooden beams supporting the roof.
Piccadilly and Fishergate Postern Tower are just a short ten minute walk from the centre of town / Shambles area, and five minutes from Clifford's Tower / York Castle area.
Make your visit to Fishergate Postern Tower part of a lovely family day out, walking the Walls (anti-clockwise in this case), and stopping off at Fishergate Bar (and the wonderful traditional pub The Phoenix Inn, where a friendly welcome and a beer garden right next to the Walls await! Join the Walls again and walk along to Walmgate Bar Gatehouse, the only gateway in York to still have its incredible barbican intact! If the 'Gatehouse Cafe' is open (usually Saturdays 10-4), why not pop in for a coffee, and sit either on the roof or on the barbican itself!
Continue anti-clockwise along the Walls for the final part of this stretch and encounter the unique Red Tower, the only defensive building on York's Walls made of brick! From Red Tower it's a short walk along Foss Islands Road to pick up the Walls again at Layerthorpe Bridge, or you can walk back into town!
STOP PRESS: The next York Walls Festival Weekend is Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th August!
