York Barbican is set to host its first ever major darts tournament when the World Seniors Matchplay takes place in September 2023. Darts has become the biggest party in sport and some of the game’s greats will be providing the entertainment as the event moves to York.
Legendary 16-time World Champion Phil Taylor, widely regarded as the greatest ever darts player, will headline the 16-player field alongside defending World Seniors Matchplay Champion and World Champion Robert Thornton.
Former World Champions John Part and Martin Adams will also appear, along with former Players Champion Kevin Painter.
The World Seniors Darts Tour began in 2022, and its inaugural World Championship saw more than 1.5 million UK viewers tune in as Thornton became the first ever winner of the over fifties event.
The Scotsman also won the first ever World Seniors Matchplay, which was held in Hull, defeating Taylor in a dramatic and entertaining final.
The full line-up and details of qualifiers for the 2023 staging will be announced in due course.
Billy Lovell of the World Seniors Darts Tour said: “2022 was an enormous success for the World Seniors Darts Tour but it was just the start.
“The players are as popular as ever and we have been delighted to see the party atmosphere that only darts can provide, created by the best crowds in sport.
“York has been starved of a big darts tournament and York Barbican is the perfect place for us to bring the unique experience of a major televised darts event.”
JenningsBet has been confirmed as the title sponsor for the second successive year, while Target will again supply the official match boards. The event will take place on September 2-3, 2023.
