Robert Hollingworth conductor

Fauré Requiem in D minor, op. 48

Lili Boulanger Pie Jesu

Fauré Cantique de Jean Racine, op. 11

For their first concert under new Musical Director, Robert Hollingworth, University Choir presents an all-French programme. Fauré’s Requiem is one of the composer’s most popular works. Characterised by its serene nature and sublime melodies, the work steers clear of depicting the horrors and tumults of the Day of Judgement, unlike many other settings of the Requiem Mass. Fauré composed Cantique de Jean Racine when he was still a student at the Ecole Niedermeyer in 1865, winning First Prize in Composition with the work. Lili Boulanger, whose career was tragically cut short by her death in 1918 at the age of just 24, dictated Pie Jesu on her deathbed to her sister Nadia. Her last completed work, the piece is striking for its haunting and ethereal beauty.
