THE MAGIC OF MOTOWN HEADLINES A TRIPLE-BILL CONCERT AT YORK RACECOURSE
A triple-bill of sensational live music comes to the Clocktower Enclosure at York Racecourse on Saturday 1st July with the return of Sounds in the Grounds.
Acclaimed international show The Magic of Motown is joined by favourite York band Hyde Family Jam plus support act The Reciprocals for an evening of pure summer fun.
The Magic of Motown is a breath-taking live concert spectacular, seen by over a million people and now in its 18th year touring the UK. This brand-new show for 2023 features seven vocalists and a seven-piece band performing all the hits, with glittering costumes, dazzling dance routines and outstanding musicianship. You’ll be Going Loco Down in Acapulco as these outstanding performers take you back down memory lane with all the Motown classics from artists such as Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, The Supremes, The Four Tops, Martha Reeves, The Jackson 5, Smokey Robinson and many, many more.
Hyde Family Jam may look like a traditional folk band but they couldn't be less traditional! Playing the songs they love of any decade, any genre and in any way they fancy, their infectious enthusiasm has earned them legions of fans across the UK and abroad. This award-winning band play fast, loud and as entertainingly as possible, and look set to get the party started.
Warming up the night and getting toes tapping are The Reciprocals, a York-based musical duo with a charming stage presence. With their boy-girl harmonies, acoustic guitars and tonnes of chemistry, The Reciprocals effortlessly mix happy and heartache. Alex and Patrick have been playing together all around the country since they first met in lockdown and began making music on Zoom. Having played to a packed Grand Opera House in York, they are looking forward to showcasing their talent at Sounds in the Grounds.
Producer James Cundall says “We are thrilled to be bringing the biggest Motown party of the year to the Clocktower Enclosure of York Racecourse with Sounds in the Grounds. The Motown classics are the songs that everybody knows and loves, across the generations. With the exuberant and highly entertaining Hyde Family Jam, and the heart-warming duo The Reciprocals, we have the perfect show for a night of summer fun.
“This year audiences have the option of enjoying the concerts either in their own designated picnic patch or in an unreserved picnic area. Our picnic patch concept enables patrons to pre-book their own space, thereby eliminating that mad scramble for the best site which often mars an outdoor concert! There will be 11 rows immediately in front of the stage with alternating patches for 2 or 4 people within each row, and behind these will be the unreserved picnic area, where people can sit wherever they like on a first-come-first-served basis.”
“We introduced the picnic patch concept during the Covid restrictions and received very positive feedback from audiences who liked knowing where they would be sitting and being able to turn up when it suited them, so we have retained that system but also added the open area to give our audiences a choice.”
Sounds in the Grounds will take place at the Clocktower Enclosure at York Racecourse on Saturday 1st July 2023. Tickets are on sale now and are priced at £32.50 for the unreserved picnic area and £39.50 for picnic patch tickets (minimum two people). Tickets can be purchased at www.soundsinthegrounds.com (booking fees apply).

For those who like to know where they will be sitting, and who prefer to arrive at any time to suit them, the picnic patches are a convenient option. There will be 11 rows immediately in front of the stage with alternating patches for 2 or 4 people within each row. For larger groups multiple patches can be purchased in one transaction, so a party of six can purchase an adjacent 2 + 4 patch, or a party of eight can purchase patches of 2 + 4 + 2 etc.
The picnic patches will be defined by painted lines in our grass arena within the Clocktower Enclosure. A 2-person patch measures W1.5 x D1.5m, while a 4-person patch measures W2.0 x D1.5m, alternating in each row. The patches will be 60cm apart within each row, with patrons booking adjacent patches obviously able to use the area in-between.
Unreserved Picnic Area
This open area, immediately behind the rows of picnic patches, allows patrons to sit where they choose in an unrestricted space. It is first-come-first-served and we politely ask you to respect your neighbour’s space.
Please bring your own chairs. You are welcome to bring your own food and drink to Sounds in the Grounds. There will also be a bar and pizzas available to purchase at the Clocktower Enclosure.
Umbrellas, gazebos and other structures will not be permitted as they impede the view of other patrons.
Children aged three and over are welcome. All under 16s must be accompanied by an adult 18+.
There is ample free car parking on the Knavesmire.
Dogs are not allowed, with the exception of assistance dogs.
The concerts will go ahead in all weathers, unless it is deemed too dangerous. Umbrellas will not be permitted as they impede the view of other patrons, so visitors are advised to dress according to the weather conditions.
