About
The Gesualdo Six directed by Owain Park with
Fretwork Viol Consort created and directed by Bill Barclay
An immersive concert for the 400th anniversary of William Byrd
Byrd’s Mass for 5 voices is theatrically interspersed with his virtuosic music
for strings.
A small number of audience members sit and stand amongst costumed musicians who gather by candlelight to worship in secret as Byrd’s incredible setting of the Ordinary is mixed with his most probing instrumental works, played where the five Proper sections of the mass would take place.
The event is secular yet staged to invite the audience into the deeply personal use that Byrd intended – a private mass for secret worship.
