About

After over five and a half years, more than 40 main exhibitions and the showcasing of work by over 100 local artists, village gallery will be closing its doors on Saturday 15th April. The end of the shop lease and old age creeping up has sadly forced the decision.

For the final exhibition gallery owners Simon and Helen Main have invited back ten 2d artists who have exhibited at the gallery, so there will be a range of styles, disciplines and media on show: watercolours by Lynda Heaton, Jean Luce and Suzanne McQuade; oils and acrylics by Paul Blackwell, Julie Lightburn, Malcolm Ludvigsen, Anne Thornhill and Hilary Thorpe; pastels by Allen Humphries; lino and wood cut prints by Michael Atkin.

These artists will join the other artists whose work is currently on show and which will remain until the close: oils by Glynn Barker; the digital art of Fiona Calder; ceramics by Meg Ashley and Kit Hemsley; fused glass work by Ruth Foster; wood turning by Ralph Shuttleworth; sculpture by Edward Waites.

With the support of all these artists this final exhibition period will also be a sale, with everything in-store being reduced, so do drop in, support these local artists, and grab a bargain.

“The Curtain Descends” opens at village gallery York on Tuesday 7th March, and it runs until Saturday 15th April.

In addition to its regularly changing art exhibitions and displays of local craft work, village gallery has featured new and old Lalique glass and crystal (they are York’s official stockist for new pieces), and have had a great selection of new and old jewellery. Simon and Helen are going to continue to deal in and sell both Lalique and jewellery with this part of the business being moved to the Antique Centre on Stonegate (yes, even the new in an antique centre!), so it’s not a complete goodbye. The on-line store www.village-on-the-web.com will also continue to serve.

Village gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 – 16:00.
