The Royal Oak

One of York's oldest and more traditional pubs with different rooms and leather upholstry, the Royal Oak dates back to the early 17th Century but has been a building on the site since the late 15th Century.

At the Royal Oak we have the tap room, a back bar, a snug and an upstairs parlour. It is the quintessential British pub which is a hidden treasure of York and just off the beaten path yet only 250 yards away from York Minster.

The Royal Oak is a pub frequented by locals and visitors and always prides itself on warm welcome and exceptional service. It boasts a great friendly atmosphere where a mixture of people can mingle, chat and feel at home.

We serve six beautifully kept real ales, of which we have three permanents (Theakstons Best Bitter, Greene King Abbot Ale and Timothy Taylor Landlord) and three guest beers which are all from local breweries one of which will always be a dark ale. We have a wide selection of gins and rums all served with a garnish. Stella Artios, Prahva, Guinness, Birra Moretti, Hop House 13, Orchard Thieves Cider and Aspalls Cider make up the rest of our draught range.

We serve Great British classics as well as a few unique dishes. As well as the Best Sunday Dinner in York

Lunch is served from midday and is £7 for dishes such as Fish and Chips, Cheese and Tomato Toastie, Scampi and Chips, Chicken and Bacon sandwich and Falafel Burger, all served with proper triple fried chunky chips and salad.

Road Directions

Located on Goodramgate

Goodramgate was in Viking times the street belonging to or inhabited by a Viking called Gurthrum, and may refer to the Viking king Guthrum who ruled from York in the 9th century. Goodramgate’s main features are the church of Holy Trinity and a row of medieval cottages called Lady Row.

Lady Row is a row of timber -framed cottages near the Holy Trinity arch and date from the 1320s when they were built for chantry priests. The cottages are notable for their overhangs where the upper floors project into the street beyond the lower floors. This overhang feature is thought to be the oldest example in England. In Bedern Lane just off Goodramgate there is a ruined Bedern Chapel dating from the 14th century.

The church of Holy Trinity, which stands back from the street was first mentioned in the 11th century, but the present building dates from 1250-1500. It can be reached via an 18th century brick archway. Inside the church is a chapel that was once blocked off from the rest of the church so it could be used by lepers where a squint hole in the wall enabled them to see the altar and take part in the service.

The nearest railway station is York, which is 1 mile away.
