The Principal York Triumphs with Top Award

The new Principal York, formerly The Royal York Hotel, has triumphed at a prestigious local award ceremony.

The recently restored grande-dame hotel proudly took home the accolade of best Retail, Tourism and Leisure destination. The Press Business Awards 2016 in association with Hiscox.

The Principal York was recognised following a multi-million-pound regeneration that has restored the jewel in York’s crown, combining historical architectural detail with all the comforts of the modern day.

A celebration of all that is best in enterprise and The Principal York beat hundreds of entries from the North East and Yorkshire’s leading businesses to win one of the 12 prestigious awards. The Principal York surpassed leading names in the local hospitality industry to collect its award at a black-tie ceremony at York Racecourse on November 17th.

Richard Mansell, general manager at The Principal York said: “It’s a huge honour that our hard work to preserve and revive one of the country’s most significant grande-dame hotels has been recognised at The Press Business Awards. Local people and our area are at the heart of everything that we do and so that makes our wins extra special to us.

It’s a very exciting time for the team and we look forward to welcoming new and returning guests to the hotel.”

A paean to Victorian Grandeur built in 1878, the hotel situated adjacent to the train station was once a stopover for Queen Victoria en route to Balmoral Castle. The Principal York can now be reached in less than two hours from London’s Kings Cross Station.

The hotel was recognised by judges for its up-to-date take on classic British hotel service that goes the extra mile. Quirky homely touches for guests of the hotel include the in-room Tuck Box, with complimentary fresh coffee, tea, crisps and biscuits, which can be restocked at the Corner Shop in the downstairs Lobby, located in a trunk-style leather armoire.

The Principal York is also home to The Refectory Kitchen & Terrace, the hotel’s restaurant, housed in a conservatory-style dining and adjacent to the restaurant, the lively Chapter House Bar that serves local craft beers, spirits and cocktails. The hotel’s elegant Garden Room, next to the main lobby and its sweeping grand staircase, is where guests can enjoy traditional British afternoon tea whilst looking out across manicured lawns to York Minster in the distance.

With a purpose-built events centre, The Principal York offers ten meeting and event spaces as well as a gym and indoor pool.
