About Us

"I hadn't expected to learn so much about my own city but it was packed with fascinating history that I had no idea about."

If you're looking for York walks with a difference, join York's Hidden History as we uncover our city's ancient, natural, and scientific secrets, and forgotten people and places. Our expert guides, Dr Simon Rogerson and Dr Liam Herringshaw, bring York's Hidden History to life with knowledge and humour.

Throughout the year, we offer private tours, talks and events for individuals, couples, families, and groups small and large. Please drop us an email (yorkshh@gmail.com) and we'll be happy to discuss what you're looking for.

Welcome to York: Royal and River Routes

From the Roman Empire to the Industrial Revolution, via Vikings, the Norman Conquest and the Wars of the Roses, the history of York is the history of England. This city has been at the heart of the action for nearly 2000 years.

We offer two 'Welcome to York' walks - the Royal Route and the River Route - which are aimed at visitors, recent arrivals, and long-term residents who'd just like to learn more about their city's remarkable history.

Guilded Tours of York's Hidden History

Offered on a 'pay what you feel' basis, our Guilded Tours normally take place at 11am on the first Wednesday of each month, from April until October. Starting and finishing outside York Guildhall, we'll uncover the medieval city hidden within the streets and buildings of modern York. Guilded Tours last around an hour, and you can book advance tickets on our Eventbrite page, or just turn up on the day.

Family events and Private tours

Our Guilded Tours and 'Welcome to York' walks are aimed at over-11s, but we also offer family events, including York fossil hunts and museum activities, and the Filthy, Beastly Tour of York. We are also very happy to lead private tours of York for individuals, couples, families and groups. Please drop us a line at yorkshh@gmail.com and we'll be happy to chat.

Opening Times

We offer private tours for couples, families, and groups throughout the year. Please get in touch via social media (@yorkshiddenhist), email (yorkshh@gmail.com) or phone and we'll be happy to discuss what you're looking for.

Welcome to York - the Royal and River routes

Our 'Welcome to York' walks come in two varieties: the Royal Route and the River Route. On the Royal Route we’ll ramble regally through the historic heart of York, meeting imperial Romans, Viking lords, and Kings of England. On the River Route we’ll take a waterside walk through 2000 years of amazing history, telling tales of fights and floods, merchants and monks, queens and castles.

Both walks begin outside the Yorkshire Museum, in York Museum Gardens, and finish by Clifford's Tower, near York Castle Museum. Find out more, and book your tickets, on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/cc/welcome-to-york-walks-4476003
