About Us

York's Hidden History takes you on fascinating journeys through the historic city of York, exploring its ancient, natural, and scientific history. Led by expert guides, Dr Simon Rogerson and Dr Liam Herringshaw, our walks are perfect for people who want a city tour that digs a little deeper.

York's Hidden History offer a variety of walks. Our four "elemental" tours are the York Air Walk, the York Fire Walk, the York Earth Walk, and the York Water Walk. Each takes place within the city walls and lasts around 2 hours. These walks are aimed at adults and children over 11, but children under the age of 11 are very welcome to come along too (and don’t have to pay!).

We also offer Ice- and Fire-Powered Family Tours of York. The Fire-Powered Family Tour of York lasts around an hour, and explores York's explosive history, from Guy Fawkes and Minster fires to Stonegate volcano-chasers and French war heroes. An Ice Tour of York, meanwhile, is the 90-minute slide-show that reveals how cool the city's history is. Seen the ice house of Monk Bar? Met the Ice Man of Peasholme Green? Climbed the Ice Age slopes of Micklegate? You will on this walk!

Last but not least, if you fancy finding fossils on the streets of York, don't miss our Great York Fossil Hunt! We'll show you the surprising places you can find fossils in the city centre, from riverside cobbles to the banks of Coney Street, and from the shadows of the Minster to the flowerbeds of Museum Gardens.

York's Hidden History is part of Hidden Horizons, which is based at The Fossil Shop in Scarborough.
