With stunning views of the Minster and the city’s ancient walls, The Grand Hotel & Spa enjoys an enviable central location.

Built in 1906 as one of the great railway buildings of York, the hotel’s graceful Edwardian architecture is complemented with the award-winning Hudson’s restaurant, whisky lounge and a luxurious spa complex that features an indoor pool and treatment rooms.

All 107 guest rooms are individually designed and furnished to an extremely high specification, creating an indulgent yet unpretentious environment for both leisure and business travellers.

Hudson’s restaurant showcases the very best in Yorkshire dining. Led by head chef Craig Atchinson the menu draws inspiration from the county’s rich culinary heritage. Why not take advantage of the good weather by enjoying its outdoor terrace area. The Terrace benefits from a relaxed seating area with superb views of the City Walls, parasols for those preferring the shade and serviced by the bar and lounge hosts. The Terrace has been designed to provide a relaxing and ambient atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a busy day at the races, a long days shopping or a hectic business event. The Terrace Dining Menu is served outside all day, and features traditional & gourmet sandwiches, salads, light dishes & desserts.

In addition the Grand offers private Whisky tasting sessions from £25, alongside private wine tasting sessions and cocktail masterclasses.

“Disappointed”

I was disappointed with the room. It was pretty underwhelming and nothing like the picture of a room on the internet. We had a view of a buiding behind covered in scaffolding - not wonderful views of York. We were woken up by men shouting and banging bins about at 7am underneath our room.
I have recently had a knee replacement and wanted to extend check out to 12.00 noon so I could keep my leg up before going for my train at 12.40. I phoned reception the night before to ask for extended check out and they said yes but check when I go fof breakfast. I did this and was met with a very firm uncompromising 'no' from the receptionist who would not listen (?Japanese name). I know that the hotel was busy and that the rooms had to be turned round but I wanted the room for a good reason and surely it would not make much difference. I felt like I was in an NHS hospital not a 5 star hotel. You are running it for your convenience and not for guests. The receptionist said I could sit in the Whisky Bar for an hour. I was asked if I would like a drink and I asked for tea. I thought this was complimentary as I could not have my room so when I walked out the waiter ran after me and embarrassed me in front of other guests.
The food in the Rise was tasty but not filling. The first 2 courses were very light and small and we had to order bread at extra cost.
My daughter could only have 20 minutes in the spa as it was full and when they rang us for her to come down it was nearly time for dinner. I was cross because the online booking for the Rise confined us to certain slots. When I got to the Rise at 6.45 there were a lot of empy tables which remained empy so had we known we could have gone later.
We went to the Whisky Bar and were given a menu. There were only a few whiskys on this so I asked for th Johnnie Walker. The barman said he would have to check if they had it!! What I didn't realise was that there was an extensive whisky list but no one told us. My daughter wanted Disorano but they had run out of this.
Overall I spent about £380 for very little. This was suppossed to be a special treat as I have had a difficult time and my daughter needed a break from a very stressful job as a solicitor. We would have been better staying in cheap hotel and go out for decent meals as we derived no benefit, only stress, from staying at the Grand.
