Enjoy a leisurely sightseeing trip onboard City Cruises and see iconic landmarks including York Minster and Clifford’s Tower, discover more about the history of York, as well as picking up some local knowledge with live and entertaining on-board commentary. Be mesmerised by a special series of recitals as internationally renowned musicians celebrate the return of York Minster’s Grand Organ following its £2m, once-in-a-century refurbishment. Plus, this summer sees the return of seasonal lates, with the opportunity to experience York Minster in the evening light when the cathedral opens its doors on Friday and Saturday evenings during the summer holidays.

Travel back in time to Viking-age York and discover the lives of people who lived in the city over 2,000 years ago. Weaving Viking legends with the stories of modern-day people, York Theatre Royal will be working in partnership with JORVIK Viking Centre on a new community production, The Coppergate Woman.
Discover one of the largest Viking hoards ever discovered in the UK this summer, with a special exhibition of Silverdale Hoard (on display until February 2023). Another exhibition not to be missed is The Bard at Barley Hall, which opens this July in York’s hidden medieval townhouse. This summer will also see the opening of the Barley Hall Coffee Shop.
Beyond the City Walls
Spend the day at Castle Howard and admire the monumental landscape with breath-taking views at every turn. Grab your friends, a basket full of goodies and soak up the atmosphere at Stillingfleet Lodge Gardens, offering an oasis of calm with a wild flower meadow and soothing water features. Described as a quintessentially English garden, it is organically managed and wildlife friendly with a tea room serving local cakes and produce. Throughout the summer, they host a programme of gardening courses and art exhibitions.

Pay a visit to Scampston Hall and fill your Instagram feed with photos of its award-winning contemporary walled garden. Located between York and Harrogate, Beningbrough Hall has beautiful herbaceous borders and wildlife areas each with their own style and beauty.
Keep the kids busy in the summer holidays with a trip to York Maze, with over 20 attractions, shows and rides it will be an a-MAZE-ing day out for the whole family.
Feel the summer vibes and enjoy a special outdoor cinema experience at Castle Howard with blockbuster films including Mamma Mia! and Harry Potter. With selected dates throughout August, bring your favourite snacks and enjoy the giant cinema screen in the open-air.

Food and Drink in York
Summer in York is about to get brighter with the arrival of Thor’s Orangery on Parliament Street. The brand-new rustic structure for 2022 will include its very own courtyard and reclaimed wood stage with a programme of music and live events throughout the summer.
Make the most of the longer evenings and enjoy a drink at one of York’s most popular spots. THOR’s Orangery has a brand new slushie cocktail menu, and a colourful selfie wall. Feast on foodie treats from local traders including Millers Fish and Chips, York Roast Co and Yuzu Streetfood. The sister site to Thor’s Orangery, the famous Thor’s SOLAST tipi has pitched up in the gardens of The Principal, York with street food from Frango Eduardo.
Get a taste of the city’s thriving food scene at The Shambles Market Food Court this Summer, enjoy street food from a range of stalls and vendors serving up everything from fresh Thai dishes, delicious Greek food and mouth wateringly good sandwiches.
