Until you can visit again, we are committed to keeping you entertained and inspired to return, when safe to do so. York and North Yorkshire’s diverse landscapes, natural beauty, and awe-inspiring architecture have attracted artists for hundreds of years, but more recently they have fascinated film and TV makers, which is great news if you want to get your York fix while you remain at home. In the first lockdown we told you about some of the many times York and the surrounding area had been brought to screens big and small. Since then, more productions have made it to our screens which showcase our beautiful part of the world.

Castle Howard: Bridgerton and The Great

Castle Howard has long been beloved of both visitors and costume dramas, and while a trip there is currently out of the question, two new shows allow you to bring its splendour into your home. Bridgerton is the racy new Netflix hit, which explores the thrills and woes of getting married in Regency London. Castle Howard also features in new Channel 4 show The Great, a comedy drama which brings to life the rise to power of Empress of Russia, Catherine the Great.

Helmsley Walled Garden: The Secret Garden

The most recent adaptation of this treasured classic novel was released last year and is now available on streaming services. The film stars Colin Firth and Julie Walters and tells the story of an orphaned girl who discovers a magical garden, using Helmsley Walled Garden, and other nearby locations, as the perfect backdrop.

York: My Dad’s Christmas Date

Is it too late to keep watching Christmas films? Or too early to start? We don’t think so, and in My Dad’s Christmas Date you can see York in all its festive glory. Streaming now on Amazon Prime, look out for York Art Gallery, York Castle Museum, The Shambles and lovely shots all around the city. Starring Jeremy Piven (of Mr Selfridge fame).

We look forward to welcoming you to see these stunning sights in the future, but only once it's safe to do so. In the meantime, please follow our Social Media channels for more inspirational content and sign up to our newsletter for the latest information on visiting once the current situation is over.

Keep your eyes peeled for announcements of the new series of Gentleman Jack which was also filmed in York just prior to Christmas.
