Step inside one of the historic gateways to York’s past

Created by the team behind the award-winning JORVIK Viking Centre, City Walls Experience at Micklegate Bar is a brand new attraction open April – October.

York’s City Walls have stood since Roman times, with the original ramparts and timber palisades replaced by stone walls in the third century AD.

Housed in the gatehouse of Micklegate Bar, you can visit the City Walls Experience to discover how York came to be a walled city and how the walls have evolved and changed since the first embankments were built by the Romans.

Whether you’re at the end, start or midway point of your walk along the walls, City Walls Experience is the perfect place to drop in and discover more about the most in-tact walls of any English City.

Discover this brand new attraction in York

Explore three floors of this important gateway and find out more about the historic walls surrounding the city of York.

As you climb the stairs to the first floor, you can learn about historic characters who have links to Micklegate Bar, which was historically the main entrance to the city for anyone arriving from the south, and particularly, the gate through which visiting Royals would pass (with the permission of the Lord Mayor).

From Royalty to soldiers and even a policeman who took up residence here, video presentations bring their stories to life. Kids can also discover a fun drawing activity!

The top floor features a central map you can walk around with displays highlighting the features from different periods in history that are still visible today, as well as those that have been lost to time. Don’t miss the immersive flyover video over the historic city of York, starting at Micklegate Bar.

As you make your way back down to the ground floor, explore the gift shop full of wonderful souvenirs to take home.
