Folk music has been an inspiration for many composers. This performance offers British and American composers’ takes on folk tradition. Vaughan Williams’ English Folk Song Suite includes nine folk songs, including ‘Dives and Lazarus’ and ‘Blow Away the Morning Dew’. It was composed in 1923 for a brass band but was later arranged for orchestra, which is the version YMS performs. His Fantasia on Greensleeves will be recognised by everyone.

Contemporary composer John Rutter said that folk music forms the “solid bedrock for a shared musical culture”. His The Sprig of Thyme is an arrangement of 11 English, Irish and Scottish songs for chorus and orchestra and includes ‘The Keel Row’, ‘Down By the Sally Gardens’ and ‘The Miller of Dee’.

Crossing the seas, Aaron Copland’s Old American Songs – including the popular Shaker song “Simple Gifts” – are based on five 19th century American songs from a variety of sources. In contrast, Gustav Holst’s Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda explore ancient Indian religious sagas, reflecting Holst’s personal interest in traditional Indian stories and music. Over several years he set 10 texts to music of which we sing three. York Musical Society. Baritone soloist John Holland-Avery, conductor David Pipe.
