“excellent. I would stay here again.”

Everywhere was clean, the staff at reception and in the dining room were very helpful and friendly, with a wide choice of food, at any rate for my requirements. I wanted a hotel with easy and quick access to the town and this was just right. One star less for faciilties: this is because of a strange feature of my room (316 in York's Monkbar). It is a long room with the bed at one end with two bedside lights. A small window is in the centre of the wall facing as you enter the room. The main ceiling light, a low wattage economy bulb is situated between window and door; the result of this arrangement means that the area in the lefthand half of of the room is in relative darkness. That end has a long table where tea serving, writing or such can be done. To see what one is doing one has to keep the bathroom light on. All that is required to ease matters there is for a light to be placed on the back wall. The hotel document asks for a sparing use of the lights. Such is the nature of the lighting arrangement in this room that that advice cannot be followed. It puzzled me as to why it had been arranged like that, but it did not spoil my visit - hence the high rating for the value for money.
Incidentally 2 points about making this review: 1) The font is too small for easy viewing, i had to strain my eyes to read my own script. 2) It didn't approve the British English spelling of centre, giving it the red line.
